A fish and chimps safari

MAY 2005

The swimming porcupine My wife Marina (Tati) and I grab the opportunity to fly to Mahale National Park. Nomad Safaris kindly allowed us to enjoy their wonderful camp there whilst getting ready for their busy season. We flew in with the operations manager Uli and the new camp managers Steve and Teena. It is always dramatic to reach this freshwater lake and land at the Mahale airstrip. This was Tati’s first visit and as I have been there a number of times and raved about the place, my promise to take her there was long overdue. We spent 10 wonderful days exploring the forests and the lake and as it was our vacation for this year- relaxing!

May the 18th was our third wedding anniversary can we dined in style! Thanks to Teena and Steve and all the staff. The only down side to the trip was that my beloved Man United lost the FA cup to Arsenal, of all people! Thankfully the Chimps never disappoint and the encounters were special.

We traveled six hours by boat for our journey out of camp to Kigoma. On the way I noticed something swimming in the lake a full mile off shore- a porcupine of all things was swimming strongly in deep water. Where was it going! GOOD TIMES WERE HAD. Thanks Nomad.
