A Safari with The African Wildlife Foundation

June/July 2006

I was asked to be lead guide for rather special safari.

The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) which is based in Washington DC had invited The Turner Foundation ( TF) to Tanzania to see for its self the challenges that face such non profit organizations in the conservation arena. The TF funded this quite in-depth overview of AWF's work and as many presentations by key personal from Tanzania's National Parks (TANAPA), The Ngorongoro District, AWF its self and other Community Conservation efforts had been arranged as well as an informal bush lunch with our former President Mr. Benjamin Mkapa, the complex logistical arrangements and guiding abilities had to be of the highest order.

My umbrella company, Sokwe Limited of Arusha, took on this task with Damian Bell and Janelle Doria as main coordinators. Damian and Janelle worked very closely with Patrick Bergin and Craig Sholley of AWF and with Mike Finnley and Philip Evans of the TF to ensure that the 23 members of the Turner family, its Foundation and various assistants and at times 7 members of AWF were well looked after as we moved from project to project.

We based ourselves in two areas and spent our days visiting projects and enjoying many wonderful presentations.

All in all a great trip and well worth the hard work. Well done AWF and SOKWE.
